Bryce Canyon National Park includes in its 37,102 acres some of the earth's most colorful rocks, which have been shaped by erosion into fantastic forms.  Bryce is not a true canyon, but a series of horseshoe-shaped amphitheaters carved in the edge of the Paunsaugunt Plateau by tributaries of the Paria River.  The Indian name for the area translates as "red rocks standing like men in a bowl-shaped canyon."  The park is distinctive for its brilliant coloring and its intricately sculptured, many-hued formations.  The main geological features of the park are easily seen from numerous roadside viewing areas such as Inspiration Point, Fairyland, and Sunrise and Sunset Points.
