Situated on the St. John River, the city is rich with Victorian architecture and graceful elm trees.  Numerous galleries, live theater, and music festivals help make Fredericton a local mecca for the arts.  Back a block from the scenic riverfront on Queen Street, Lord Beaverbrook Art Gallery has an extensive collection of over 2,000 pieces of British fine arts, with many paintings by the European masters.

You can experience a bit of the history of Fredericton in the Garrison District, host to artisan shops, summer festivals and daily re-enactments of the Changing of the Guard in front of City Hall and Officer's Square.  The city boasts a number of historic buildings, including the Old Government House, the official residence of the Governor of New Brunswick.  Constructed of sandstone and set amid rolling lawns, the building took two years to build and was completed in 1828.
