The Grand Canyon of the Colorado River is one of the world's outstanding spectacles. In form, size, flowing color, or geological significance, it is unsurpassed.  The canyon is 277 miles long and averages 10 miles in width, from rim to rim.  The park's eastern border is bounded by lofty, multicolored walls; beyond lies the Painted Desert.  The western portion of the canyon includes the broad Havasu Canyon, part of the Havasupai Indian Reservation.
The Grand Canyon region possesses five of the seven life zones ascribed to the Northern Hemisphere.  The geological aspect of the Grand Canyon is of great scientific importance.  No other place in the world displays such a vast panorama of time so clearly.  Each stratum of rock distinctly marks a period of the earth's history from two billion years ago to the most recent formations, which are 200 million years old.
