Hangzhou, founded in 221 BC, is the capital of the small but prosperous province of Zhejiang.  An early visitor was Marco Polo, who considered Hangzhou’s West Lake to be the most beautiful place in all his travels. 

Hangzhou is home to several notable temples, particularly Lingyin Si that contains an enclosed giant Buddha carved from fragrant camphor wood.  The city’s crown jewel is West Lake, which lies between Hangzhou’s western edge and low hills.  Temples and gardens overlook the lake from the manicured shoreline, and several islands dot the water. 

Two causeways with arched bridges draw delicate lines across the lake.  The full effect is of a classic and quite beautiful Chinese landscape.  Today, in fact, Hangzhou is a favorite amongst Chinese tourists.
