Las Vegas (pop. 1.4 million) was originally a camping site for travelers on the old Spanish Trail during the 1770s.  The city was founded in 1835 under the government of the Mexican republic.  On August 15, 1846, during the war between Mexico and the United States, General Stephen W. Kearny entered the town and the Mexican alcalde (mayor) took an oath of allegiance to the United States.  There was little further development in the town until 1879 with the arrival of the railway.  Brigham Young built a fort on this site in 1885.  During the building of nearby Hoover (Boulder) Dam in the midst of the Great Depression of the 1930s, Las Vegas became a boomtown for gambling halls and nightclubs.  Today, Las Vegas is one of the leading destinations for conventions, and it is a city with an endless array of entertainment and gambling venues.
