Yellowstone National Park has the distinction of being the country's first national park as well as the largest and best known.
The park, named from the Minnetaree Indian word "mi tsi a-da-zi" (Yellow Rock River), is accessible by several scenic approaches to its five entrances.  Although most of the park's 3,472 square miles lie in northwest Wyoming, they also extend into Montana and Idaho.  The central portion of the park is essentially a broad, elevated volcanic plateau that lies between 7,000 and 8,500 feet above sea level.  On the south, east, north, and northwest are majestic mountain ranges with peaks and ridges rising between 2,000 and 4,000 feet above the enclosed tableland.
The park's spaciousness makes it a stronghold for wildlife such as the grizzly bear, elk, bighorn, and bison.  These noble creatures, who need roaming room to live and perpetuate their species, are maintained by the park's vast acreage.  Also found in Yellowstone are majestic winged animals of the wilderness: the bald eagle, trumpeter swan, raven, and great gray owl.
